Kim Hoorweg & the Missionary 5 @ Winkel van Sinkel, 10-02-2008

12-02-08 | 3 Comments

Kim Hoorweg is only 15 years old, yet she already performed at the biggest jazz event of the country last year, the North Sea Jazz Festival. She might not have the voice of Norah Jones nor Nina Simone, but she indeed has all that jazz. Thus, it wasn’t a surprise that her free concert with the Missionary 5 last Sunday was very popular.

The concert was supposed to start at 15.00, and by 14.00 the venue, Winkel van Sinkel, was already full. But because of some technical hick-ups which were handled quite unprofessionally, it could only begin at 16.00! Even worse, during the waiting time, the organizer forbided people who queued impatiently outsite to enter, regardless there so many dissapointees left the venue due to the late start.

Anyway, once it started, it was an enjoyable performance.  Kim sang beautifully the classic jazz songs mostly taken from her CD, ‘Kim is Back’, inviting a long applause from the patient audience.

I arrived at the venue half an hour early granting me the permission to wait in the room next to the stage. Some other photographers were there too, which made feel so important. When the show began, I could move freely around the stage.

I must admit that the lens I have was not quite long enough to get tight frame pictures of the performers. But I really took the advantage of having the 1.4 diagframa, the opening that I used all the time during the show. Although it was a bright day outside, the venue was quite dark, and the lighting was covered in red, there was only one bright spot, and unfortunately Kim was not exactly there.

I used the auto ISO, and I only got the ISO 800, I was tempted to change the shutter speed, and I really don’t know why didn’t I do it. Sometimes when I am taking pictures I feel like in the trance, I am really in my element and that’s why I just keep on shooting and ignore everything.

For the processing I chose the custom white balance and toned down the exposure so I could get rid the redness off.
